Incheon Airport to Seoul: Transfer Guide
Compare AREX, airport bus and taxi from Incheon Airport to Seoul using the factors that change the real answer: group size, luggage, hotel district, final transfer and arrival time.

The cheapest ticket is not always the best door-to-door value
Compare the total hotel route, not just airport-to-station time. Group size, luggage, bus-stop distance and arrival hour can change the winner between AREX, airport bus and taxi.
The fastest advertised train is not always the fastest trip to your hotel, and the cheapest ticket is not always the best value after a long flight. The right transfer from Incheon Airport to Seoul depends on five things: where your hotel actually is, how many people are travelling, how much luggage you have, what time you land, and how difficult the final transfer will be.
Current Seoul guidance lists the AREX all-stop train at roughly ₩4,150–₩4,750 one way, taking about 59 minutes from Terminal 1 or 66 minutes from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station. The AREX Express is ₩13,000 and takes about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 or 51 minutes from Terminal 2. Airport buses vary by route; the 6015 to the Myeongdong corridor is currently ₩17,000, while K Airport Limousine's 6703 to Gangnam/COEX is ₩18,000. Taxi cost depends on the destination and traffic. Seoul's official airport guide estimates Myeongdong at about ₩47,000–₩52,000 before the airport expressway toll, and a Seoul taxi can add a 20–40% night surcharge between 22:00 and 04:00 depending on the time.
Choose by traveller situation
| Situation | Often strongest starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, light luggage, hotel near Hongdae or Seoul Station | AREX | Low cost, predictable timing and no traffic risk. |
| Solo/couple, hotel very close to an airport-bus stop | Airport bus | A slightly higher fare can remove the subway transfer and luggage handling. |
| 3–4 people, several large suitcases | Compare taxi against bus total | The group fare can narrow the per-person gap dramatically. |
| Hotel in Gangnam/COEX | 6703 bus or taxi | Rail usually requires a long cross-city transfer; 6703 serves the district directly. |
| Late-night arrival | Night bus or taxi | Regular rail ends around midnight; N6701/N6703 provide limited overnight coverage. |
| Mobility-sensitive traveller | Door-to-door bus or taxi | Stairs, station length and final walking distance can matter more than ticket price. |
When AREX is genuinely efficient
AREX is excellent when the station is already aligned with your route. Hongdae is an obvious case because the all-stop train serves Hongik University Station directly. Seoul Station is another. If your hotel is one simple subway stop or a short taxi ride from Seoul Station, the Express can be attractive for predictable timing.
But do not compare "43 minutes to Seoul Station" with "80 minutes by taxi to Myeongdong" as if both trips end at the same door. Add the time to get from the train platform to the next subway line, wait for that train, handle luggage, find the correct exit and walk to the hotel. For some hotels that is still the best route; for others it changes the answer completely.
When the airport bus beats the train
The airport bus earns its higher fare when it removes effort. Route 6015 costs ₩17,000 and serves the Myeongdong area. K Airport Limousine 6701 serves City Hall/Gwanghwamun/Myeongdong-area hotel stops at ₩18,000, while 6703 serves Gangnam/COEX at ₩18,000. If the stop is within a genuinely short walk of your hotel, the bus can be the most efficient choice for luggage even when the scheduled travel time is longer than rail.
The weak point is traffic. Build a larger buffer on departure day than the published minimum.
When a taxi becomes rational rather than luxurious
A taxi is expensive for one person but can be surprisingly competitive for a group. Seoul's official guide gives Myeongdong an estimated metered fare of roughly ₩47,000–₩52,000 plus an airport expressway toll of ₩7,900. That means a daytime group of four is roughly in the ₩13,700–₩15,000 per person range before any additional waiting or traffic effects. Four tickets on a ₩17,000 airport bus cost ₩68,000. In that specific scenario, the taxi can be both easier and competitive.
The calculation changes at night. Incheon Airport publishes Seoul taxi surcharges of 20% from 22:00–23:00, 40% from 23:00–02:00 and 20% from 02:00–04:00. Use the official taxi stand and avoid unofficial solicitations.
Late night: do not assume "taxi only"
K Airport Limousine operates limited night services. N6701 connects the airport with the Seoul Station/Euljiro/DDP corridor, while N6703 serves Jamsil/COEX/Gangnam directions. Frequencies are much lower than daytime buses, so check the live timetable for your date. If the next night bus requires a long wait or still leaves a difficult final transfer, a taxi may be the more sensible choice.
How to make the decision in 60 seconds
- Find the exact hotel entrance and the nearest airport-bus stop or AREX-compatible station.
- Count suitcases, not just people.
- Check whether your arrival is inside normal rail/bus hours.
- For 3–4 people, compare the whole taxi fare against the total bus/train fares.
- Penalise any route that requires stairs, a long station walk or multiple transfers after a long-haul flight.

Destination-specific shortcuts
| Hotel area | Start by comparing | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hongdae / Yeonnam | AREX all-stop train | Hongik University Station is directly on the airport railway, so rail often avoids an unnecessary downtown transfer. |
| Seoul Station / City Hall | AREX Express vs 6701 airport bus | The train wins on predictability; the bus can win if its stop is much closer to your hotel entrance. |
| Myeongdong | 6015 / 6701 bus vs AREX + final transfer | Myeongdong is close to Seoul Station geographically but not every hotel is easy from the AREX platform with luggage. |
| Jongno / Insadong | 6701 or rail + short taxi/subway | The bus can reduce a difficult final transfer; rail remains attractive if the hotel is near a simple Line 1/5 connection. |
| Gangnam / COEX | 6703 vs taxi | Both avoid the long cross-city rail/subway transfer; a taxi gets more competitive as group size increases. |
| Jamsil | 6705A / N6703 where schedule fits | Direct airport-bus service can be more comfortable than crossing the city by rail with luggage. |
Three realistic cost examples
One traveller to Myeongdong: AREX all-stop plus a local transfer is usually the price baseline. A ₩17,000 airport bus costs more but can be better value if it stops near the hotel. A taxi is mainly a comfort purchase.
Two travellers with two large suitcases: the bus becomes more attractive because both travellers get seats and luggage storage without managing a subway transfer. Taxi is still a premium but the price gap is smaller.
Four travellers to Myeongdong: using the current official taxi estimate plus the airport expressway toll, the daytime taxi can land around the mid-₩50,000s to high-₩50,000s before traffic/waiting effects. Split four ways, that can be below or close to four ₩17,000 bus tickets. This is why "taxi is expensive" is not a complete rule.
Departure day is a different optimisation
For the trip back to Incheon, reliability matters more than shaving ten minutes from the forecast. Road traffic can expand a bus or taxi journey. Rail is more predictable but still requires time to reach the platform and handle luggage. If you are checking bags, claiming tax refunds or departing during a busy period, build the airport buffer first and choose the route second.
